La dotation initialement pr\u00e9vue de 180\u00a0machines les fit parfois surnommer \u00ab\u00a0180 unit\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb.\u00a0A noter que 104 d&rsquo;entre elles furent tenderis\u00e9es\u00a0\u00e0 partir de 1907 devenant les 4.1801 \u00e0 4.1908\u00a0et plus tard 040 TA 1 \u00e0 104 SNCF. Seulement\u00a0deux exemplaires de la s\u00e9rie furent incorpor\u00e9s\u00a0aux effectifs de la SNCF mais quelques unes\u00a0surv\u00e9curent longtemps sur les voies de sucreries\u00a0du bassin parisien, comme la 4.647 encore en\u00a0service en octobre 1959 \u00e0 l\u2019usine de Silly Le\u00a0Long , pr\u00e8s du Plessis Belleville (Oise), et\u00a0disparue au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 60. Plus chanceuse,\u00a0la 4.853 construite par Cail \u00e0 Denain en 1866\u00a0et qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9form\u00e9e par la Compagnie du\u00a0Nord le 31\/12\/31, fut rachet\u00e9e par la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0Sucri\u00e8re et Agricole de Vauciennes (Oise),\u00a0pour la desserte de son embranchement\u00a0particulier o\u00f9 elle fut utilis\u00e9e jusqu\u2019au milieu\u00a0des ann\u00e9es 60. Bien que l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e de locotracteurs\u00a0diesel rendait sa pr\u00e9sence inutile, la direction\u00a0de l&rsquo;usine d\u00e9cida de tout de m\u00eame la conserver\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0au cas o\u00f9\u00a0\u00bb, pour finalement la confier \u00e0\u00a0l&rsquo;association. Elle arrivera au d\u00e9p\u00f4t le 23\u00a0novembre 1974.
